More than once, I’ve encountered questions like, “If God already knows what we need, what’s the point of praying?” Or, “If God is going to answer my prayer the way He wants regardless of what I say, then why should I pray?” More recently, someone asked, “What’s the point of a prayer request? Is it like the more people who are praying for the same thing, the more likely God is to answer?” These questions may come up often, whether from sincere, growing Christians, from those who feel disillusioned about their faith, or from atheists.
Hello, I'm Ida Freeist and I'm a regular person who loves Jesus, and I love prayer. I’ve considered these questions seriously. In fact, I believe they are some of the most intelligent and thoughtful questions a person can ask. They get to the heart of how we relate to God and what prayer really means in our lives. It’s important that we give them careful consideration because our answers can shape our understanding of God’s purpose and His love for us.
When people ask these things, I always assume that they’re being genuine, no matter who they are. And I love sharing my thoughts, not because I have all the answers, but because prayer is something I’ve seen work in remarkable ways—not just in my life, but in the lives of others, too. One story about prayer that I love to repeat is about a pastor, his young daughter, and the simple, trusting prayer of a child.
One evening, this pastor's daughter had broken his glasses—a seemingly small mishap, but it weighed heavily on her heart because she knew they didn’t have the money to replace them. She felt so upset, knowing her family’s financial limits, but the next morning, she was a different person. She bounded into the room, a huge smile lighting up her face. “Daddy,” she announced with confidence, “I prayed, and Jesus told me He’d give us the money by the end of the day!”
Perplexed, the pastor looked at her, unsure how to respond. “And why do you believe that?” he asked gently.
With childlike certainty, she replied, “Because that’s just the kind of friend Jesus is!”
The pastor’s heart filled with love but also concern. As a father, he worried her faith might be shaken if the answer didn’t come as she hoped. He even considered finding a way to fake the money, just to protect her young, innocent belief. But he resisted, deciding to trust and leave it in God’s hands.
That evening, he finished an evangelistic series he’d been leading. After the last service, his congregation handed him a small envelope with a thank-you card. He accepted it graciously, though he didn’t open it right away, instead he slipped it into his bible case. The next morning, during a prayer group, he brought up his daughter’s innocent faith and asked them to pray that God would guide her young heart.
It was then that his wife looked at him in surprise and asked, “Didn’t you check the thank-you card?” Confused, he pulled it out of his bible case, opened it, and there inside was a hundred-dollar bill, more than enough to replace his glasses. In that moment, he realized his daughter understood something about Jesus he had forgotten: that prayer isn’t merely about asking, but about a deep friendship and trust with God. She saw Jesus as the friend who comes through, the One who listens and provides. This beautiful illustration has touched my heart time and again reminding me that prayer is more than a collection of pretty religious jargon.
Within this book I will emphasize the fact that Prayer isn’t a formula, nor is it a guarantee that we’ll get what we want. Rather, as the little girl in our story knows, it is an essential ingredient of a relationship with Jesus. It's a way of aligning our hearts with God's will, trusting that He knows what we need even before we ask. Philippians 4 verses 6 and 7 encourages us to “be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Prayer invites us into deeper communion with Him. And that’s where the true power of prayer lies—not in the outcome, but in the connection we forge with the Creator of the universe, who is always listening.
