Temperance is the cornerstone of a balanced and healthy lifestyle. It’s what keeps us from going to extremes, whether it’s with food, physical activity, or any other habit we enjoy. In simple terms, temperance is about self-control—doing enough to benefit our well-being without overdoing it or neglecting what’s good for us. It’s also about steering clear of anything harmful. When we practice temperance, we give our bodies the chance to thrive, free from both excess and deficiency.
Don't fool yourself however! Living a balanced life doesn’t mean you have to give up the things you love. It simply means finding ways to enjoy them in moderation. For example, if you enjoy a sweet treat now and then, temperance doesn’t mean cutting it out entirely.
Instead, it means finding a healthy balance—having a piece of chocolate or dessert once in a while, but not every day or in large quantities. The same goes for other enjoyable activities, like screen time or social media use. Practicing temperance means enjoying these things without letting them take over your time, energy, or focus.
Maybe you're someone who loves coffee but knows that too much caffeine disrupts your sleep. By being temperate you are able to enjoy a cup in the morning, savoring it, and stopping there. In doing so, you get to enjoy your coffee ritual while keeping your sleep schedule and energy levels intact. This is what temperance looks like in practice: enjoying what we love, but knowing when enough is enough.
While temperance encourages moderation, it also calls for complete avoidance of harmful practices. Smoking, drug use, and alcohol consumption are all habits that can damage our health over time. Even when these practices provide momentary pleasure or relief, their long-term effects can be harmful. Practicing temperance in this regard means understanding the value of saying “no” to things that don’t serve our well-being, even when they seem tempting or socially acceptable.
Avoiding harmful habits can also extend to less obvious behaviors, like excessive stress, overworking, or negative self-talk. These, too, can have damaging effects on both mental and physical health. By recognizing when something is harmful—whether it’s a substance or a mindset—we can choose to let it go, replacing it with habits that support a healthier, happier life.
It’s important to remember that health is not one-size-fits-all. What works well for one person might not be ideal for another. Practicing temperance involves tuning in to your unique needs, preferences, and boundaries. Maybe you’re someone who thrives on a regular exercise routine but finds that more than 45 minutes of activity each day leaves you exhausted. Or perhaps you enjoy socializing but know that you need regular downtime to recharge.
Temperance allows you to listen to your body’s signals and adjust your habits in ways that feel right for you. For instance, some people find that they feel best when they eat three meals a day, while others prefer two larger meals. It’s all about finding what feels balanced for you.
Temperance isn’t about following a strict set of rules; it’s about discovering the lifestyle choices that support your well-being and that help you to be your best.
Here are some practical tips for incorporating temperance.
Set Boundaries. Identify areas where you tend to go overboard or fall short. Setting small, realistic boundaries can help you practice moderation in these areas. For example, if you tend to binge-watch shows, decide on a specific time limit or day for watching TV.
Practice Mindful Eating. Pay attention to hunger and fullness cues rather than eating just because food is available. Slow down, savor your meals, and listen to your body to determine when you’ve had enough.
Create a Balanced Routine. Build a daily schedule that includes time for work, rest, physical activity, and relaxation. A balanced routine can prevent burnout and ensure that you’re dedicating time to different aspects of your well-being.
Evaluate Your Habits Regularly. Life is constantly changing, and so are your needs. Take time to reflect on whether your habits are supporting your health or if they need a little tweaking. Adjust as needed to maintain a sense of balance.
Temperance brings harmony to our lives. It helps us enjoy life’s pleasures without being controlled by them, and it frees us from habits that don’t serve our long-term well-being. By practicing temperance, we empower ourselves to live healthier, more intentional lives. As you embark on your journey toward balanced living, keep in mind that it’s not about rigidity—it’s about finding joy in moderation, making choices that reflect your values, and creating a lifestyle that is just right for you.
