Years ago, I lost 45 pounds in a single year, without any intentional exercise or dieting. My weight dropped from 165 to 120 pounds without even trying. A few months later, I regained about 5 pounds, and from then on, my weight fluctuated between 123 and 125 pounds, never going above 125—as long as I adhered to 8 simple principles. I’ll share more about those soon.
To be fully transparent, I did make a few changes in my diet. I shifted from eating meat to a vegetarian lifestyle, and six months later, I transitioned fully to a vegan diet. I also began eating on an intermittent schedule, having two meals a day instead of three on most days. At the time I had never heard of intermittent fasting, and even with these changes, I wasn’t “dieting.”
My focus was on improving my health, so I made a deliberate lifestyle change—and I loved it! I felt more energized, my mind was clearer, and those nagging aches and pains disappeared. I could even climb stairs without losing my breath. That’s why I stuck with it. My goal was to feel healthier, not to lose weight. In my culture, being “thick” is actually the ideal look, if you know what I mean. So, weight loss wasn’t my intention—it was just a happy byproduct of living a more balanced, health-focused lifestyle.
And in case you’re thinking, “Oh, the vegan diet and intermittent fasting must have done it,” let me tell you about my sister. She stayed with me for an entire summer while on break from university. When she arrived, she was pale and definitely on the “thick” side. By the end of the summer, though, her skin was glowing with a beautiful caramel tone, and she’d lost around 9 to12 pounds. Unlike me, she still ate meat with her meals, three times a day. She didn’t intentionally exercise either, but since I didn’t own a car, we walked pretty much everywhere.
When she returned to school at the end of the summer, she told me that nearly all her friends and classmates were commenting on how healthy and vibrant she looked! She sounded so happy and confident, and I couldn’t have been more thrilled. It was amazing to see how much the 8 principles had positively impacted her overall health and well-being.
During my own journey toward holistic health, I discovered these 8 principles packaged into an acronym—“NEW START". Fitting, right? I was literally looking for a “new start,” and here it was, spelled out for me.
“NEW START” stands for Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunlight, Air, Rest, and Trust in God.
